Greetings, Saints!

During this Christmas and New Year season, we have been focusing on God's amazing, unconditional love for the world--love so great that he gave his one and only Son even for you and me. On New Year's Eve, we were reminded that nothing will ever be able to separate us from God's love for us in Christ. The following devotion is adapted from that meditation on Romans 8:31-39 - What Do You Have to Fear? For the full text of the sermon, click on the title or listen to the sermon by clicking on the Messages from the King graphic below.

So what do you fear? Everyone, as fearless as they might seem, fears something. Sometimes it's subtle. Sometimes it's obvious. Sometimes it's what wakes you up in the night. So what do you fear as you enter this new year and new decade? Did you know that our God has answers for those deep-seeded fears?

Do you fear the loss of your livelihood or the uncertainty of future finances? Our God has an answer for that. “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also graciously give us all things along with him?” He will provide all your needs, knowing what’s best for you.

Do you fear the guilt and consequences of past sin? Our God has an answer for that too. “God is the one who justifies…Christ Jesus, who died and, more than that, was raised to life is the one who is at God’s right hand and who is also interceding for us.”

Do you fear the prospect of declining health? Do you fear the prospect of death for yourself or a loved one? Do you fear what sin or hardship could do to you or your family? Do you fear your own future? Do you fear the future of your kids or grandkids as our society becomes more hostile to Christianity with each passing year? Do you fear trouble or persecution or want or loss or danger? Do you fear bearing the cross? Do you fear rejection from people you know and love because of your Christian faith? Do you fear that somehow someone or something will eternally separate you from Christ’s love?

Into that bleak darkness of fear steps our God. With him by our side, we cry out with defiance into the darkness, “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? Just as it is written: ‘For your sake we are being put to death all day long. We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither things present nor things to come, nor powerful forces, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Dear friends, what do you have to fear? If Jesus is holding you and will never let you go, nothing, no one will be able to separate you from him and his love for you. Not the cold hand of death. Nothing you ever have to deal with in life. No power in heaven. No scheme of man. Nothing that may trouble you in this present life. Nothing that may lurk in the shadows of your future. No exalted height of joy. No deep sadness and woe. In Christ, you have nothing to fear!

In fact, you are more than conquerors. You are more than victorious through our Lord Jesus Christ. Satan and sin and death cannot overpower you. Fear cannot overwhelm you. You can enter 2020 as confident as a conqueror because Jesus is by your side. He is holding you in the palm of his nail-scarred hand. He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. He has never abandoned you in the past and will never let you go. Because of God’s love for you in Christ, you have no need to fear.

Confident in God's Unshakable Love,
Pastor Gumm
