Greetings, Saints!

This past Sunday we continued our Welcome Home series. God's Word helped us to see how home is where you are free to be yourself--and that is just as true in God's family, a family where we are truly loved in spite of our faults. Why? Because Jesus faced condemnation and punishment for us. Now we live as God's children, loving one another as our Father loves us. The following devotion is adapted from Sunday's sermon on John 8:31-36 - Welcome Home: Where You Are Free to Be Yourself. For the full text of the sermon, click on the title! (Coming Soon: A weekly audio podcast of our Sunday sermons!)

One day Jesus was in the temple courts. Now there were some in the crowd who believed his message. To them, he told them, “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples. You will also know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Yet many in that crowd were opposed to him. Jesus told them, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: Everyone who keeps committing sin is a slave to sin. But a slave does not remain in the family forever. A son does remain forever. So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” So what did Jesus mean about slavery and freedom and truth?

“Everyone who keeps committing sin is a slave to sin.” "Everyone" means no one is excluded, not even you and me. By nature, we are all slaves in some way, shape, or form. Think about that. Every time you sin, your sinful nature tightens the chains. Every time you give into that familiar sin of weakness, Satan piles on more guilt that you can’t do anything about. The world mocks you as a hypocrite or just another fool so blinded by sin that you can’t even see how enslaved you really are. By nature, I’m not free, and neither are you.

So what can I do to set myself free? Try as I might, I can do nothing. I can’t just wake up one morning and decide to be free. Neither can you. I can think I’m free much like if you were to take a fish out of a lake and throw it on the sandy shore. “Alright, fish, be free!” In that moment, that fish has been set free to live in a bigger world than that lake. Yet in that moment, that fish has basically been condemned to death because it’s no longer living where and how God intended it to live. Like that fish, try as I might, I can’t set myself free.

…But Jesus can. Jesus does. Jesus will. “If the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” Jesus sets you free, not by condemning you to death, but by returning you to the life God intended for you. You come to know that through his Word. There you find out how Jesus “redeemed” you. We hear the word “redemption” and we think coupons. Yet in God’s Word, redemption has nothing to do with saving a little money. Instead it has everything to do with the price Jesus paid for your freedom—the price of a perfect life free of the burden of guilt, the price of an innocent death to break open the shackles of your sin, the price of an empty tomb to guarantee your true and eternal freedom in him.

As a blood-bought, redeemed child of God set free by Christ, you can leave the broken shackles and the shattered chains and the impossible burdens behind. Jesus has already taken care of them. Because the Son sets you free, you are really, truly free! No matter the guilt you bear, no matter what happened in your past, no matter where you came from or where you’re at right now, Jesus sets you free and gives you a truly “free” life filled with hope and forgiveness, peace and rejoicing.

Set Free by Jesus,
Pastor Gumm

Lies We Believe – Much of our unhappiness and emotional struggles are caused by the lies we tell ourselves. Unless we identify our lies and replace them with the truth of God's Word, spiritual growth will stall and emotional health will be impossible. Join us Sundays @ 9 am in the Family Life Center lunch room as we consider The Lies We Believe...and The Truth We Need.

School Fundraiser - You have a creative opportunity to support our school through the Original Works Program. Students have created special artwork for this project, including King of Kings items. Household products can be purchased that feature the children's artwork. Our goal is to raise funds to off-set the cost of transportation for school field trips. If you are interested in participating in this fundraiser, please contact Staci WarneckeSales run through November 8. All items will be delivered to school in early December.

Growing in Hope – Why does it matter that Jesus is my Savior? Does the Bible really apply to my life? Where can I get more of what I heard today? How can I join King of Kings? We are planning to begin a new session of our Bible Information Class soon to provide answers to those questions and many more. If you are interested in taking part in this course, please reply to this e-mail or contact Pastor!

Every Member Visits - Pastor Gumm is still visiting all of our members! If you have not scheduled a visit, please be sure to reply to this e-mail to schedule your visit ASAP!

An Encouraging Word: Watch this! I am about to create new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered. They will not come to mind. Instead, rejoice and celebrate forever, because of what I am creating.
(Isaiah 65:17-18a)
