Greetings, Saints!

This past Sunday we continued our Welcome Home series with a look at a most terrifying day--the Last Day or Judgment Day. For good reason, the end of the world is terrifying to think about, but thanks be to God! Jesus has given us a home where we are perfectly safe. The following devotion is adapted from Sunday's sermon on 2 Thessalonians 1:5-12 - Welcome Home: Where You Are Perfectly Safe. For the full text of the sermon, click on the title! (Coming Soon: A weekly audio podcast of our Sunday sermons!)

$20.64 billion. Yes, billion with a b. Back in 2011, Americans spent $20.64 billion on home security measures. The amount has only gone up. By one estimate, that $21 billion has increased to $34 billion a year spent on home security measures. That’s a jaw-dropping amount of money, but why spend so much on security?

We want to be safe. We all want home to be a place where we can feel safe. We all want home to be a place where our family can feel safe. We all want home to be a place where we and our families can have safety and security away from everything and anyone that can hurt us. So there’s a natural desire for safety. To some extent, fear plays a role—fear for ourselves, fear for our loved ones, fear for our earthly possessions.

We all want to be safe and secure, but no matter how much you spend on home security, can you ever be sure that you are perfectly safe? Can you ever be absolutely sure that you and your family are perfectly safe from those who can do you harm? Even if you invested in a system so tough that the Pentagon would describe it as “overkill,” even if you could be sure that at a given moment no human alive could break into your system, none of us would still ever be perfectly safe. Why?

Something looms on the horizon. We don’t know when it’s coming, but deep down we all know it’s coming. It’s shadow looms larger with every passing day, every passing year. The reality behind that looming shadow has the potential to be far worse than any violent criminal, terrorist attack, or even physical death.

The Last Day is coming. Maybe you know it as Judgment Day or the end of the world. Hollywood has made millions on movies about the end of the world, but what does the Bible say? Well, the Bible tells us that on that day, the earth will shake. All creation as we know it will fall apart and be wiped away. The dead will be raised and the living will have nowhere to hide. Then the holy God of heaven and earth will come in terrifying glory to judge all the living and dead, every last soul, every last one of us. What a dreadful Day it will be. Yet even more so that Day fills our hearts with comfort, even hope because Jesus has given us a home where we are perfectly safe.

You see, our God is a just God, but he is also a gracious God. The Lord in his grace saw your sorry and lost condition and did something about it. Your Brother Jesus came gently and humbly as a tiny infant and perfectly grew up into an adult. He became your substitute where you have failed. He lived the perfect life you never could and then offered up that life. As your substitute, he suffered the hell, the judgment, the condemnation you deserve for your sins and presented his life as the required payment for your sins. As your substitute, he then conquered the terrifying power of death by rising from the dead.

Jesus did all that to bring you into his family—the Church—so you can be perfectly safe, even on the Last Day! Jesus takes away all that guilt that fills you with dread when you hear about the Last Day. Jesus removes all the fear that fills your heart and mind as you worry so much about the future.

Safe in Christ,
Pastor Gumm
