Greetings, Saints!

The following devotion is adapted from Sunday's sermon on Matthew 11:2-11 - Rejoice in the LightFor the full text of the sermon, click on the title or listen to the sermon by clicking on the Messages from the King graphic below.

John the Baptizer was an amazing prophet. Prophets had foretold his coming centuries before he was born. His reason for existence was to prepare the way for the coming Savior. Yet in Matthew 11, we find John languishing in the darkness of a dungeon. He had been arrested for calling the local ruler to repent and a death sentence could be handed out at any time. He and his followers struggled with doubt, but Jesus gave him hope and certainty--not the promise of a prison break and fiery judgment on the wicked, but promises fulfilled and eternal salvation guaranteed.

Sometimes in life you feel like John. Perhaps it happens when someone you trust, someone you love fails you. Perhaps it happens when someone like that passes away. Perhaps it happens when something like your job or your health unexpectedly doesn’t prove to be the rock of certainty that you once thought it was. Perhaps it happens when you find yourself under the blazing heat of temptation or when you simply look out at what’s going on in our world.

What you experience doesn’t seem to turn out the way you expect. “God, why does it look you, the Ruler of all things, are just letting things descend into chaos? Have you lost control? Why does everything always seem so dark? You promised to bless believers like me, but why does it seem like everything is going so badly in my life? Why can’t I catch a break? Where’s the victory? Where’s the joy, the happiness, the abundant blessing, the exceeded expectations, the light shining in this dark world?”

How does Jesus respond? Does he condemn you for your lack of faith? Does he ridicule you because you don’t understand life like he does? No. He shines the light of his Word in your darkness.

“Remember how I fulfilled what Scripture said I would? Look closer at all those prophecies in Scripture and see me. See what I have done for you. Peer into my manger bed and see peace between you and God. Follow my travels along the dusty roads of Israel and see how I turn back the effects and consequences of sin. Look up at me on the cross dying and see my sacrifice for your sins. Peer into my empty tomb and see how I even conquer death. See my forgiving and patient compassion for you when you feel weak or even when you doubt! Despite all the rumors to the contrary, see how I still reign over all things! See my light and see clearly with my light! See why you can depend on me, no matter how many failed expectations you experience in your life. Rejoice in my light!”

Dear friend, people fail. Promises get broken. Life so often leaves you wandering in darkness. Yet Jesus never fails. Jesus never breaks a promise. Jesus defies all our expectations and gives us reason yet again to rejoice in his light. For through that light, we see clearly our long-expected Savior. Through that light, we see clearly our salvation. Blessed are you who see Jesus with open eyes filled with his light. You can leave your expectations with him.

Rejoicing in the Light of Christ,
Pastor Gumm

An Encouraging Word: All this happened to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son. And they will name him Immanuel,” which means, “God with us.” When Joseph woke up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. He took Mary home as his wife, but he was not intimate with her until she gave birth to her firstborn son. And he named him Jesus. (Matthew 1:22-25)
