Greetings, Saints!

On Sunday, we kicked off the new school year here at King of Kings. We rejoiced at the beginning of a new year for our elementary school and preschool and as we kick off a new year of opportunities for young and old to grow in God's wisdom through Bible study. The following devotion is adapted from Sunday's sermon on 2 Timothy 3:14-17 - Whose School Do You Attend? For the full text of the sermon, click on the title!

Have you ever purchased a school supply at the beginning of the year, but never or rarely used it? I recall purchasing a math compass for drawing circles. In grade school, it wasn’t a tool that I used regularly, and I had to always watch out that I didn't poke myself or someone else with it. Instead it usually ended up in some dusty, back corner of my desk.

Sometimes you and I do the same thing with God’s Word. Even though it’s the only source of real truth, we let our Bibles gather dust. We don’t bother to crack our Bibles open—and they do crack without use. Unfortunately, unlike unused school supplies, by letting our Bibles gather dust, we end up depriving ourselves of God’s wisdom personally applied to our daily lives.

...But consider what Paul wrote to young Pastor Timothy! “…Continue in the things you have learned and about which you have become convinced. You know from whom you learned them, and that from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” God’s wisdom is like no other “wisdom” you’ll find. Philosophy and science and math help us consider and answer many questions as we look at how God has designed our world. Yet they both fall short of adequately explaining our God, his unconditional love for us, and the Savior he sent to rescue us. History help us see the rise and fall of nations and God’s hand guiding history, but history falls short if we do not view it as “His Story.”

As great as human wisdom can be, the wisdom that comes from God’s Word surpasses even that of the most brilliant minds. Why? All of that earthly wisdom, all of that knowledge is limited by our inability to think outside of ourselves, to grasp who the true God is and what he has done for us. Yet in God’s Word, the curtain is pulled back and you see not just a holy and almighty God, but a God who loved you so much that he sent his only Son to save you through faith in him.

In that Word, God gives you what you can't possibly find anywhere else--forgiveness for your guilt, peace for your troubled heart, hope for the future, all through Jesus with no strings attached. That wisdom changes our hearts and lives eternally from being focused on ourselves to being focused on him and those whom he puts in our path to serve. May our divine Teacher and Savior Jesus bless you as you learn and live in his grace from now until eternity!

Growing in God's Wisdom,
Pastor Gumm

New Worship Series! The Narrow Door – What does it mean to follow Christ? It’s tempting to hope that once I become a Christian, my life will get easier and my problems will go away, but the life of a Christian is humbly lived beneath the cross. Jesus describes that path as going through a narrow door. Following Christ often comes with difficulty or at a personal cost. Yet following Christ through difficulties leads to godly wisdom and heavenly blessing. Join us Sundays @ 10 am as we learn what it means to follow Christ!

Prepared to Answer – Our monthly class helping 12th graders learn to understand and handle objections to their Christian faith will begin next Sunday, August 18 after worship.

Digging Deeper – Our Wednesday AM Bible studies will kick off on Wednesday, August 21 @ 10:30 am in the conference room with a study of Martin Luther’s Large Catechism. Copies of the Large Catechism will be available for a nominal cost for class participants.

Annual Voters’ Meeting is planned for Sunday, August 25 @ 10 am. All voting members are strongly encouraged to attend as we review the past year and look ahead to the next.

Growing in Hope – Why does it matter that Jesus is my Savior? Does the Bible really apply to my life? Where can I get more of what I heard today? How can I join King of Kings? We are planning to begin a new session of our Bible Information Class in August to provide answers to those questions and many more. If you are interested in taking part in this course, please reply to this e-mail or contact Pastor!

Every Member Visits - Pastor Gumm is visiting all of our members—and there are King of Kings families and individuals who still need to schedule visits! Please be sure to reply to this e-mail or contact Pastor to schedule your visit ASAP!

An Encouraging Word: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us get rid of every burden and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with patient endurance the race that is laid out for us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author of our faith and the one who brings it to its goal. In view of the joy set before him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of God’s throne. Carefully consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinful people, so that you do not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:1-3)
