Greetings, Saints!

The following devotion is adapted from last Sunday's sermon on Luke 16:19-31 - The Source of True Security. For the full text of the sermon, click on the title!

Do you yearn for security? Psychologists describe it as “a feeling of certainty that everything is OK and that all your basic needs are provided…” Feeling secure and having peace of mind is a basic human need. Yet don’t we want more than just peace of mind? Don’t we want everything to be more than just okay? We don’t want anything to cause us worry or stress or fear. We want everything set so we can live a worry-free, stress-free, secure life made easier because I have everything I need and so much more. So you see the person driving the fancy car or owning the big home in the exclusively gated community or having an attractive spouse with healthy children going to the best schools or having that corner office or enjoying that ideal retirement, and you wish you could live the dream too.

…But are they? Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t. If they don’t have the Source of true security, if they don’t have Jesus in their lives, if they don’t have the Word of God in their lives, they should be pitied, rather than admired. Who cares how much money they have! Without Jesus, they are nothing more than poor, ragged beggars. Who cares what they own or what office they possess! Without Jesus, it’s all just stuff that won’t be going with them when they die. Who cares how healthy their kids are or how attractive their spouse is! Without Jesus, they’re all dead in sin just like the rest of us are by nature. Without Jesus, no wealth, no job, no house, no car, no family, no retirement matters, because without Jesus, this life is just a desperate dance with death before the darkness.

Is that what you want? Or do you yearn for something better? In his Word, God shows us what our physical eyes fail to see. We see Jesus, who became poor that we might have the eternal wealth of heaven. We see Jesus, who left behind the feasts of heaven to fill the hungry with good things, giving each of us a place at his heavenly banquet. We see Jesus, who took the tattered rags of our sins on himself that we might wear the holy garments of his righteousness before God. We see Jesus, who saw our foolish pursuits for security in the things and people and positions of this life and instead sacrificed his own security, even himself, to give his true security for all eternity. We see Jesus, who saw our desperate dance of death and ended death’s control over us by rising from the dead on Easter morning.

Now secure in Christ, you “see” others in a way you didn’t before. Maybe you see a loved one chasing after the security of this life, and you have the opportunity to help them find true security in Jesus. Rather than seeing yourself in the isolation of your own home and making your life’s goal your own enjoyment of worldly wealth and pleasure, you finally see the people “outside the gate.” You see Lazarus. You see those who need the love of Jesus spiritually and physically.

You see them and you respond with Christ’s love. You care about that soul in need. Perhaps you serve as God’s hand helping that Lazarus from your own wealth. Perhaps you serve as God’s mouth encouraging that Lazarus needing God’s Word. Perhaps you serve as God’s eyes seeing each person as a soul precious to Christ, and responding to them with Christ’s self-sacrificing love. May our God help you to realize that you are secure in Christ.

Secure in Christ,
Pastor Gumm

Welcome Home Sunday - October 20 - Make sure to leave this Sunday open on your calendar! Don't schedule any appointments. Don't plan any vacations for that Sunday. Instead, plan to be here at King of Kings on Sunday, October 20 @ 10 am! Why? On October 20, we are celebrating Welcome Home Sunday. We will talk about the importance of having the support of a Christian community. We hope to have 100% of our King of Kings members in attendance. Let’s pack the house! Let’s see what that looks like, when every member comes together. We plan to have Finger Food Fellowship in the Family Life Center afterwards! So be sure to set Sunday, October 20 aside so you can join your brothers and sisters in Christ here at King of Kings!

Digging Deeper – Our Wednesday AM Bible study continues this Wednesday @ 10:30 am in the conference room with a study of Martin Luther’s Large Catechism as we dig deeper into the 1st and 2nd Commandments. If you would like to purchase a copy of Luther’s Large Catechism, please reply to this e-mail!

Learn the Reason for the Hope That You Have!
 – Sundays @ 9 am!
  • Sunday School for PreK-Grade 5 meets in the school library in the Family Life Center. Join us this week as we learn how God saved Noah and his family and many animals on an ark!
  • ACTS for Grades 6-12 meets in the conference room. Join us this week as we discuss risk taking!
  • Adult Bible Study meets in the lunch room in the Family Life Center. Join us as we continue our True and Reasonable Bible study! We'll take a closer look at the resurrection of Jesus.

True and Reasonable – How do I respond when people reject or object to the Bible or Jesus or my Christian faith? In a world growing increasingly hostile to Biblical Christianity, we face objections to what and in whom we believe. So what can we do? Join us Sundays @ 9 am as assemble a “toolbox” that can help us face objections to our faith, including the best tool of all—the Word of God. All adults are encouraged to attend!
Gift Card Drive – At King of Kings, we regularly get requests for help with groceries, gas, and other basic needs. Occasionally, we also have school families with such needs. Through October, we will be collecting gift cards of $25 or less at the church office to enable us to better help these families in need. We are looking for gift cards from local grocery stores (Publix, Winn-Dixie, Aldi, etc.), Walmart, and local gas stations. For gas station gift cards, please try to purchase cards that limit the purchase to food or gas. For more info, please reply to this e-mail!

Meditations Needed – WELS Prison Ministry is looking for used copies of Meditations to provide to prisoners under our spiritual care. The copies need to be in good condition. If you have any copies to donate, please drop them off at the school office.

Growing in Hope – Why does it matter that Jesus is my Savior? Does the Bible really apply to my life? Where can I get more of what I heard today? How can I join King of Kings? Sign up for the next session of our Bible Information Class to find answers to your questions and many more. If you are interested in taking part in this course, please reply to this e-mail or contact Pastor!

Every Member Visits - Pastor Gumm is still visiting all of our members! If you have not scheduled a visit, please be sure to reply to this e-mail to schedule your visit ASAP!

An Encouraging Word: For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)
