|King of Kings Connections - 10 July 2020
Dear Family in Christ,
I write this as another summer rainstorm lets loose on our campus. Sometimes the rains come down soaking the earth. Other times the storm rolls in loud and fast with rain and wind battering everything in sight. Perhaps you grow tired of these daily rainstorms here in Central Florida, but the fact is, they leave the area lush and green and fruitful.
Have any of these rainstorms ever reminded you of God's Word? Perhaps not, but God himself makes the comparison through his prophet Isaiah. Consider these words from Isaiah 55: Just as the rain and the snow come down from the sky and do not return there unless they first water the earth, make it give birth, and cause it to sprout, so that it gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater, in the same way my word that goes out from my mouth will not return to me empty. Rather, it will accomplish whatever I please, and it will succeed in the purpose for which I sent it. What's God saying here? Like the rains, his Word goes out and waters the earth. The sad news that our sins condemn us in light of God's holy Law brings sorrow to hearts. Yet the good news that Christ has paid for our sins and gives us eternal life through faith in him, that brings joy to hearts. The Holy Spirit uses that Word to turn us away from sin and bring us to faith in Christ our Savior.
Like the rains, the Word of God is effective. It always affects the person who hears it. There is no neutral ground when it comes to God's Word. Some will receive it with joy. Some will have to think about it more. For some, that Word will be like an annoying pebble in their shoe, and some will outright reject that Word. For some hearing that Word, they will reject what they hear and be further confirmed in their inborn unbelief. For others, the Holy Spirit will use that Word to create faith in a person's heart, connecting them to life eternal in Christ.
The Word of God does not return to our God empty-handed. It accomplishes his purpose as that Word goes out through us to people in our lives. Through us, the Lord blesses others and brings them to faith in Christ. Through our efforts, the Lord puts them on a path that will ultimately lead them to the glories of heaven with Jesus someday.
The rainstorm has passed here, but the Word continues to go out. Lord, let your Word through us accomplish your purpose and bring your harvest home!
